The Semi-Finals: Avercamp v. Basquiat!

"Semifinals" designates the Fourth to Seventh Rounds of the Infinite Art Tournament, and it's what we're going to be doing on weekends for a while.  This is a Left Bracket Fourth Round Match between Hendrick Avercamp (5-1-3, 71-46, .607) and Jean-Michel Basquiat (3-1, 25-13, .658).  Basquiat has been waiting for Avercamp's series of ties to be resolved since he lost to Balla in an October 2012 match. Leaving the Tournament this week after falling to Avercamp is Sofonisba Anguissola (3-2-1, 44-35, .557).

  1. Avercamp. My gears spun on this one for a while. I like the Basquiat skull painting the best out of everything here, but Avercamp is, on average, nicer.

  4. Sure, Avercamp! Didn't expect he'd be around so long, but I'll take him over that scribbler Basquiat.

  5. I was going to say "apples and oranges" but they are both such great historical documentarians. So I'm going with the recent history and my man Basquiat.

  6. Elliott and Nora are not impressed by Basquiat and vote for Avercamp. I love both for diametrically-opposed reasons. This is like a an apples versus couches match-up. I'll go Basquiat.

  7. It would be hard not to get my vote against Basquiat, who even now that he has really grown on me is still, let's be frank, crap -- and it's not going to happen when I've got dear old Avercamp to vote for. Kolf!!!

  8. Nora did a report on Basquiat and would like to change her vote because “I learned about his life and have seen more of his drawings and I know what kind of person he is and I used to not like him but now I do.” In response to your claim that Basquiat is crap, Nora says, “you are coo coo. Basquiat has amazing paintings. Even though he doesn’t draw inside the line they still are beautiful.”

  9. OH SNAP! OK, we'll change Nora's vote until the Avercamp report is assigned.

  10. And, including in Candida's personally delivered vote for Avercamp, and the Nora Flipflop, we end up with eight, wait, no, NINE votes for Avercamp, five votes for Basquiat. Avercamp will have a tough match ahead against Fra Angelico, and this top edge of the bracket is almost to the point of catching up to the rest of the Tournament. Basquiat heads out with a great 3-2 legacy and a copy of the home game.
