The New Monday Quiz, Summer Edition

This week's quiz experiments intelligently with switching different perspectives and voices, including those of children, the outcast, the insane and the illiterate.

1. When I started reading this 1878 best-seller, I was unfortunate enough to overhear someone say that, as everyone knows, the title character throws herself under a train.  What a spoiler!  Still, it was a pretty good book -- in fact, it often places near or at the top of "best novel ever" lists.  And the story starts with a husband sleeping on the couch, because his wife found out about him and the governess.  What's the book?

2. The Wiki plot summary for this 1998 summer blockbuster goes like this:
In 1985, 16-year-old high school student Ted Stroehmann lands a prom date with his dream girl Mary Jensen, which is cancelled after a painful and embarrassing zipper accident.
Events of the movie are occasionally narrated in song, from a tree, by Jonathan Richman.  Name that film!

3. Who is the famous artist who made these three paintings?

4. This week's famous author is:
known for his experimental writing style with meticulous evaluation of the utterance, diction and cadence and scrupulous attention to the details of characters’ utterance and state of minds. He experimented intelligently with switching different perspectives and voices, including those of children, the outcast, the insane and the illiterate. Moreover, he is talented at the arrangement of narrative chronology, sometimes by breaking the time frame and re-combining it with whole new aspect. His rich and brilliant baroque writing style is developed in the extremely long sentences embedding with complex subordinate parts.

And most of his novels were set in fictional Yoknapatawpha County. Who is the author?

5.What country is shown here?

6. Who's the painter?  What's the name of the painting?

7. Greetings from what city?

8. It was fifty years ago today, a group of four young men did something for the last time.  It happened in San Fransisco's Candlestick Park.  What was the event?

Last week's Summer Quiz answers were like this:
1. Middlesex
2. Guardians of the Galaxy, I think?  Yes.  Guardians of the Galaxy.
3. Kandinsky
4. Dickens
5. Bulgaria
6. That's God instilling the spark of life into Adam, as painted by Michelangelo on the roof of the Sistine Chapel.
7. Rome!
8. Nolan Ryan... let's see... I think he pitched his 5000th strikeout.  Yes.
Christine M. wins with six of eight, a half mark in front of Eavan, the only contestant to get questions one and two.

Therefore, the title of Monarch of Summer Quizzing is completely up for grabs, as we enter the final match with DrSchnell and Christine M. tied at three victories apiece.  Everyone else is encouraged to finish strong and force them into a frustrating tie!

The New Monday Quiz, Summer Edition

Every week, this quiz forms an uneasy alliance with a group of extraterrestrial misfits

1. Here's a capsule description of a 2002 best-seller:
The first half of the novel is about Cal's family and depicts his grandparents' migration from Bursa, a city in Asia Minor, to... Detroit, Michigan, then a booming industrial city. The latter half of the novel, set in the late 20th century, focuses on Cal's experiences in his hometown of Detroit and his escape to San Francisco, where he comes to terms with his modified gender identity.
What's the book?

2. In a big 2014 summer blockbuster, "Peter Quill forms an uneasy alliance with a group of extraterrestrial misfits who are fleeing after stealing a powerful artifact." What's the name of the movie?

3. Who is the famous artist who made these three paintings?

4. Pip, Madame Defarge, Uriah Heep, Esther Summonson, Wilkins Micawber, and little Jenny Wren are all characters created by this author. By what author?

5.What country is shown here?

6. Who!?  What?!  Where?!

7. Greetings from what city?

8. Twenty-seven years ago today, a man named Nolan Ryan did something for the 5000th time.  That's more times than anyone else has done it, before or since!  What did Mr. Ryan do so very often?

Last week's Summer Quiz answers were all like:
1. Pride and Prejudice
2. Saving Private Ryan
3. Pablo Picasso
4. James Joyce
5. Honduras
6. a self-portrait by Rembrandt
7. Hong Kong
8. It was the first ship to go thru the Panama Canal
Christine M. got a perfect slate, quickly followed by DrSchnell.  That means that the good doctor will need to disassemble the Summer Quiz trophy, which came into his keeping last week, and send half of it to Christine M. in the Buckeye State.

Incidentally -- and although everybody knows it's all about the goodwill, not the medal count -- the current Summer-season score is DrSchnell 3, Christine M. 2, Susan 1, pfly 1.
