The Infinite Art Tournament Left Bracket Second-Round Elimination: Van Doesburg v. Martin!

It's a tough week for the early Italians, as First Round rivals Simone Martini and Masaccio have both been forced out with records of 1-2-1 and 1-2 respectively.

Both of today's contestants have struggled to stay alive in the Tournament.  A big win here might give one of them some momentum going into an eventual trial against the loser of the Ely/Manet match.  But that's all probably a few months in the future.

Theo Van Doesburg
1883 - 1931
Dutch

John Martin
1789 - 1854
British
  • Beat Italian sculptor Marino Marini in Round 1.
  • Tied with Simone Martini in his first attempt at Round 2.
  • Lost to scientific illustrator Ernst Haeckel in Round 2.
  • Beat Masaccio in Round 2.

Vote for the artist of your choice in the comments, or any other way that works for you. Commentary and links to additional work are welcome. Polls open for at least one month past posting, but likely much longer.

I thought about this for a while and I'm still not satisfied with my decision. This is really close for me! I'll vote John Martin, but it's a shame that one of these artists has to go.

Susan says "I love Martin's paintings -- they seem to be the equivalent of a made-for-TV apocalypse movie."

As much as I hate to vote for someone who got into fight with someone about diagonals, Van Doesburg earns this round.

Martin.

Hmmm, like Morgan I'm conflicted, but only because I could lose both of these guys without heartache. I'll go for Van Doesburg.

I'm voting Van Doesburg in this one, on the strength of the grey composition. Martin is a bit overblown for my tastes.

Ooo, my two favorite types of paintings: quadrilaterals and overwrought dramatic landscapes. Quads win: Van Doesburg.

van Doesburg, though it's not an overly enthusiastic vote.

Van Doesburg takes the last four votes to end up on top, six votes to four. He may struggle against Manet in his next contest... but maybe he won't! Thanks for voting
