It's the first weekend of an even-numbered month, and we celebrate those around here with a Fourth Round match. This time it's Kandinsky and Klee. They were colleagues, friends, and even housemates back in the day, but in the Infinite Art Tournament, only one will keep his perfect record intact! But will it be Kandinsky? Or Klee?

Russian; worked internationally
- Defeated Willem Kalf decisively in Round 1.
- Beat play-in photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson in Round 2.
- Beat Anish Kapoor easily in Round 3.
Paul Klee
1879 - 1940
German
- Beat Yves Klein black and blue, mostly blue, in Round 1.
- Knocked around the popular Gustav Klimt in Round 2.
- Defeated Banksy without too much trouble in Round 3.

ReplyDeleteIt is rather amazing how much I adore Klee--how lyric and inviting and singular--and how consistently Kandinsky's work fails to cohere into anything beyond that colorful scrapheap of doodles that says to me, "oh, yeah, a Kandinsky." Klee, Klee, a thousand times Klee!

ReplyDeleteYeah, I love them both, but will go with Kandinsky. Reading that he may have had synesthesia also makes sense to me. It does seem like he's drawing music.

ReplyDeleteThis is a fun match for our household. I think of Klee as "the poor man's Kandinsky," which is pretty much a perfect little mirror of Mrs.5000's views on the subject (see above). And here's my mirror-image vote: Kandinsky.
