ReplyDeleteI'll take Marc, though of course I think Haeckel is wonderful. I'd privilege art over illustration, but it's not just that. Marc takes what I like about Delaunay's color and what I love about Feininger's prismatic effects, and transforms animals into fable. In my mind, no one but Chagall or Klee could match that sense of innocence and wonder.
