The plan for today was to pit the winner of the Avercamp/Bellows Left Bracket Third Round tiebreaker against the winner of the November 2013 Anguissola/Agasse matchup. But, in the kind of art history drama you can only get at this blog, Avercamp and Bellows managed to tie in their tiebreaker.
Avercamp tied with Bellows. Bellows had tied with Ford Maddox Brown, and Avercamp had tied with Arcimboldo. So we could reasonably expect Arcimboldo/Brown to be another very tight match, right? Of course not. Arcimboldo trampled on Brown, 11 votes to 3.
That brings us to today's match, in which the extremely early surrealist will be taking on the second most famous Bruegel in all of art history! Jan Bruegel is a Left Bracket phenom, and has won four straight matches after losing to his dad in the opening match.
Mr. Brown had a good run; his 2-2-1 record included 27 votes in favor, 43 against. Also leaving us this week is Jan Bruegel's victim Arthur Boyd, who went 2-2 in the Tournament, chalking up 25 votes against 34.

Arcimboldo, because I find his work very entertaining, and because he helped me on a Monday Quiz recently.
Arcimboldo!
Arcimboldo, but a tough choice....
Arcimboldo.
Arcimboldo
Oh, this is a hard one. I was thinking Arcimboldo at first. But the more I think and look, and, well, imagine which paintings I'd rather have on my own wall...I think I'd grow tired of Arcimboldo sooner. He's fun, sure, and a master of his thing, but Bruegel's paintings have a detail I can get lost in, wondering about. So I'm saying Bruegel.
Arcimboldo for me and Elliott. "I think he has a better imagination.
Bruegel. I really dislike Archibolo, not quite sure why.
I'm in complete agreement with pfly, so am voting for Bruegel. I especially love that his animals act like animals on the way to the ark. I think it takes a lot of imagination to get the details right, and for each painting to create its own little world.
Via email: " I love the Fruit Guy, but have perhaps had my fill. For going further, I will vote for J. Bruegel."
I too have had my fill of the Fruit Guy. J. Bruegel!!
My man JB.
Hey, Arcimboldo won this one a long time ago, and I forgot to say anything about it! But this match is closed.
