The medieval Dutchman, who lost his first one but has followed up with three straight wins, knocked out Robert Delaunay 10-5 to make it to this point. The flamboyant Spaniard, by contrast, won his first two, got snared in a tie, and then lost a heartbreaker to Caravaggio. We will have to see if he can recover his momentum in this hard-hitting match-up!

I do like much of Dali's work, but I am enjoying the purity of line and color from Gerard David more in this matchup.
Dali.
Gerard David. Dali literally makes me nauseous.
I think of Dali as probably the most talented painter among the Surrealists. Certainly he's the most annoying. It's hard to see his work as if for the first time: I look at a melting watch, and also see him with his ridiculous moustache making bug eyes at the camera. Dali, get over yourself! That top painting is worth a thousand melting watches and any number of phallic elephants. But I don't think he gets it.
David, on the other hand, is remote in time, unassuming, and the more I see of his work the more I like it. You want surrealism? Take a look at the little farmer couple pushing the great big strawberry plant. Is that not the most charming thing you've ever seen on the facing page of Mary and the baby Jesus? I'm for David!

I never had the "Dali is irritating" problem. Dali for me.
I just had a more or less accidental moment when I was looking at this string of paintings without thinking about who painted them, or where they stood in art history, or anything like that. And going from the bottom to the top, I liked the first four, then really like the next three, and then thought "Wow!" at the last one. So whatever my head might say, my heart says David.

Dali was up two when the bulk of the votes were in... but two late votes for G. David locked things up for a few months... and then a much later vote from Candida tipped the scales. HER VOTE COUNTS!!! ...and so does yours.
G. David, 6-5.
