The Infinite Art Tournament, Left Bracket Third Round: Canova v. Carpaccio!

It has been more than a year since we've seen either of these Italian fellows, but they've been cleared back into action by the resolution of a tie they weren't directly involved in.  Canova is one of the few artists who have lost their first match but won everything afterwards to keep alive in the left bracket.  Can he keep his streak alive against Carpaccio?  It depends, in part, on what you have to say about the matter.

Antonio Canova

Vittore Carpaccio
died 1526
Venetian
  • Beat modernist sculptor Sir Anthony Caro in a dust-up that went down to the last vote in Round 1. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!!!
  • Beat Italian futurist Carlo CarrĂ  in another dust-up that went down to the last vote in Round 2. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!!!
  • Took a beating from Mary Cassatt in Round 3.

  1. Canova. I liked his work before, and still do. Especially the silk-covered dais.

  2. Canova - though we're getting into matchups where it's harder to pick now!

  4. Oh, I like Carpaccio. I like the profusion of details, from complex scenes to simple portraits. And I love the bored Venetian ladies with their dogs.

  5. I'll take the first guy. I think what put it over the edge was the angel on human love sculpture.

  6. Canova. Such grace is unreal, but those sculptures are like slow motion dance.
