  7. Hockney's work is inventive, appealing, and of our time. Da Fabriano's work--what comparatively little has survived--is exquisitely rendered and not of our time. For me, it has a gentleness and mastery of detail that bridges the centuries quite beautifully. Da Fabriano has my vote.

  8. I feel like a real Philistine voting against Gentile da Fabriano, especially after what the missus just said, but I think I'm going to have to go for Hockney on the strength of the photomontage thing.
