The Infinite Art Tournament, Round FOUR: Giotto v. van Gogh!

With the first weekend of an even-numbered month comes a Fourth Round match.  This time around it's the legendary Florentine master of fresco against the legendary nineteenth century Dutch eccentric!  And as always, we ask the subtly profound question: which one do ya like better?

Giotto
1267 - 1337
Florentine
  • Defeated Giulio Romano in Round 1.
  • Snuck by Giorgione in Round 2 by a two-vote spread. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!
  • Zipped easily past Alberto Giacometti in Round 3.

Vincent van Gogh
1853 - 1890
Dutch; worked in France
  • Beat up on Hugo van der Goes in Round 1.
  • Got past Natalia Gontcharova in Round 2.
  • Gave El Greco a real drubbing in Round 3.

Vote for the artist of your choice in the comments, or any other way that works for you. Commentary and links to additional work are welcome. Fourth-round matches are open for at least three months after posting.

  1. Van Gogh. I love the way he uses blue.

  2. The second Giotto reminds me of that common scene in a movie when a couple in love starts kissing in a crowd, oblivious to everything going on around them. And then I did some research and found out it was Jesus and Judas. Probably not what Giotto was going for...

    Anyway, Van Gogh

  3. Maybe I'm just feeling contrary, but I'll give my vote to Giotto.

  4. I'm not sure how I would be voting if the Arena Chapel had been open the day I wandered around Padua with a friend twenty-odd years ago. But it was closed, and I'm voting Van Gogh.

  5. Hey, didn't I vote yesterday? I went with van Gogh, but got all sentimental about Giotto's Arena Chapel being closed the day I wandered around Padua with my friend Peter. Damn! I'm doing it again.

  9. As Julie says, it's Van Gogh -- not even close. The flying Dutchman gathers 13 votes against Giotto's 1, and makes it look easy moving into the fifth round. Giotto stays alive on the left hand side.

Voting in the Infinite Art Tournament? Awesome. And, please be aware that purely anonymous votes are not counted. You don't need to log in or use your real name, but you must identify yourself in some fashion for your vote to count.
