    It's a rout. Kirchner's outstanding works heralded Expressionism. He, perhaps, was the most important artist of his generation.

  5. Neither one fires me up on the face of it, but I'll allow myself to be carried along by Louis de Marsalle's enthusiasm and go with Kirchner.

  6. No, I like Kitaj, because his awkwardness is sprawling and epic and, for me, oddly engaging. With hints of narrative, like some poetic and uneven novel doing battle with history.

  7. I can't remember having seen or heard of either artist's works before, but there's something about the second Kitaj that tips my vote in his favor.
