The Infinite Art Tournament, Round 3: Corot v. Dali!

Today's match is a little out of sequence; thanks to ChuckDaddy for alerting me that I needed to get it up and running.  If you don't think you'd have noticed that it was out of sequence -- and indeed, if you've never suspected that there was any intentional pattern to the order of the matches in the first place -- then that's perfectly normal.  ChuckDaddy is a bit of a go-getter when it comes to bracket theory.

By the way, don't procrastinate in casting your vote with this one!  It can only be up for three or four weeks!

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot
1796 - 1875
French

Beat 16th Century Italian Correggio in Round 1.
Surprised Gustave Courbet in Round 2.

Salvador Dali
1904 - 1989
Spanish

Savaged somebody named Charles-François Daubigny in Round 1.
Got away from Lucas Cranach the Elder in Round 2.

  1. Hey, I told you as well! Forget the contributions of the Dork Emeritus? I see how things work around here.

Anyway, Dali, but barely. Both are pretty good.

  2. Corot is nice, but I have to go with Dali on this one.

  3. Full Disclosure: Morgan mentioned the sequencing problem too, but a little too early, and then I forgot. You see how things work around here.

    Corot: Tranquil
    Dalí: Vibrant

Close call, but I lean towards Dalí
    ---
    Böcklin: Excellent composition
    BruegHel: Too much

    I prefer Böcklin
    ---
    Judd: Boring
    Kahlo: Interesting

    Kahlo
    ---
Delaunay: The early work is more interesting than the later
    Gainsborough: Mediocre

    Delauney!
    ---
David (I wonder if you can call him Dutch, considering he moved at age 24 from Holland to Flandres and stayed there his whole profesional life; his style is Flemish Primitive; that city in the painting is Bruges; both Holland and Flandres at that time was part of Habsburg Netherlands): Beautiful, tranquil
    Delacroix: Expressive

    I lean towards David
    ---
    Jordaens over Jones
    Hodler over Hockney
    Hiroshige definitely! over Hicks
    John over Johns

  5. I like Dali, but I love those paintings by Corot.

    Corot. It's a French thing.

  6. Dali gets old, though I like the one with the roof hovering over the shoulder blades. Corot for me!

  7. Hi, Michiel Matthijssen -- Welcome to the voting. I'll try to make sure to get these all counted (it's a bit tricky when a vote isn't in a the comment thread of the pairing it's attached to).

MEANWHILE, I like the way Dali talked Corot's sitter into turning around and showing a little bit of shoulder.

I feel boring for choosing Corot over Dali. But here I am doing it just the same.

  8. Wow! Dali went up on Corot 6-1, but then Corot claimed five straight votes to lock it all up in a tie!

Thanks for your controversial vote! The controversy will not go away, as this sets up two very hard-hitting matches, Caillebotte/Corot and Caravaggio/Dali. This tournament is just going to keep getting more painful, my friends.
