The Infinite Art Tournament, Round 1: Varo v. Beauneveu!

Up to this point of the Infinite Art Tournament, there haven't been many interruptions to the orderly alphabetical entrance of First Round contestants. That will change from here on out, however, as resolution of First-Round Ties and the gradual entrance of artists from the great Play-In Tournament will be occupying the first of most of the remaining bracket quartets.

Awesome voters, please welcome Remedios Varo to the canon of Tournament-grade artists, and welcome back André Beauneveu after two years of anxious pacing in the tied artists' holding pen!!

Remedios Varo
1908 - 1963
Spanish; worked in Mexico

Finished First in Phase 1, Flight 3 of the Play-In Tournament with a voting score of .917.
Finished First in Phase 2, Flight 1 of the Play-In Tournament with a voting score of .500.

André Beauneveu

Tied with Domenico Beccafumi in his initial Round 1 outing, in January 2012.

Ten Motivational Posters for Galley Slaves

Just add stock photography.  These seemed like a real hoot when I was making them up.  Now I'm not so sure.

Teamwork: One man rowing alone spins in circles.  A ship's crew rowing together achieves ramming speed.

Endurance: Every voyage is made up of single strokes of the oar.

Inspiration: The lash does not tell me I have failed, it tells me that I must work harder to succeed.

Ambition: Unless you are unshackled, the view never changes.

Community: There is no "I" in "galley."

Challenge: When I have faced the battle, the shoals, and the storm at sea, then I can say I have truly lived.

Leadership: What have I done today to help my seatmates move the ship forward?

Effort: You can't say "trireme" without TRY!

Loyalty: The whip will only scar me, but the enemy can send me to the bottom of the sea.

Brotherhood: My seatmates share my burden; I shall not complain of their stench.
