The Infinite Art Tournament, Round Two: Giacometti v. Gilman!
It's been a while since we had a First Round tie, but behold! Ghiberti and Ghirlandaio fought to a standstill and will be be seen next in tiebreak contests. The bracket shakes itself a little, and we proceed with a contest of Big Name modern sculpture versus Medium Name British Impressionism. Alberto Giacometti

Part of me wants to see Giacometti fall...because his tall tall people look so tippy? No, I don't know why really. But not this time. I also admit a weird nostalgia for Giacometti. I remember seeing, and being sort of confused, by his sculptures in the Albright-Knox, as a little kid.
I do not grock-o-metti in the way a lot of people do. Or perhaps just not yet. But meanwhile, I think that Gilman has something interesting going on with portraying the isolation of people in public and semi-public settings (not necessarily, for me (and maybe not for Gilman either) such a bad thing. I personally kind of enjoy my inevitable alienation from other human beings. It's peaceful.)
Oddly, given my normal preferences, I'm going with Giacometti. Gilman might have had more of a shot with me were it not for the poor young woman stuck in the corner.
