The Infinite Art Tournament, First Elimination Round #16/64

Faceoff #1: Domenichino v. Dossi

Domenichino
1581 - 1641
Italian

Routed by Donatello in the Tournament's first and so far only Round 1 shutout.

-----

Dosso Dossi
c.1490 - 1542
Italian

Lost by a wide margin to the colorful Kees Van Dongen in Round 1.

Faceoff #2: Duccio v. Van Dyck

Duccio
1255 - c.1319
Siennese

After a miracle comeback attempt, fell short of beating Jean Dubuffet in Round 1 by a two-vote swing. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!

-----

Sir Anthony Van Dyck
1599 - 1641
Dutch; worked in Britain

Crushed by Albrecht Dürer in a tough Round 1 match.

Vote for the two artists of your choice! Votes generally go in the comments, but have been known to arrive by email, by postcard, or in a sealed envelope.

Please note that you may vote only once in each face-off.  Opining that both of the artists in one of the two face-offs is superior to the other is fine, but casting your votes for two artists in the same face-off is not permissible.

Dossi and Van Dyck. Although the other two aren't bad. This is probably the strongest first round in the left bracket that we've seen in a while.

Dosso Dossi and Van Dyck. Glad to have the small-headed horse back in the competition.

Shit, is poor Domenichino ever gong to get a vote?

Dossi and Duccio

I hereby cast a pity vote for poor Domenichino, largely out of indifference for Dossi and his awkward posings and with grumblings about how both of the bottom guys could kick both of the top guys' asses.

Van Dyck's reputation has slid since the time of our grandfathers, but I still think he's awesome. Duccio's pretty fine too, but my vote goes to the Dutch expat.

Dossi is an easy choice in the first contest, though I expect Artist X will crush him soon.

I've been torn in the second contest. Van Dyck is a winning portraitist, but I'm going with Duccio as one of the key artists who transformed the Byzantine into something really, really yummy. Go Siena.

It took some googling to be sure, but I'm saying Dossi. Also Van Dyck.

Dossi and Duccio
I don't know what the deal is with that weird horse. Is it like one of those paintings of a baby by someone who has never actually seen a baby? Or is it a window into what horses looked like long ago?

Here's a vote-by-mail for Dossi and Duccio.

Domenichino and Van Dyck. I had to Google more images for the Domenichino/Dossi pairing, and that didn't really make it a lot easier, but I'm giving the slight edge to Domenichino there. If I owned a museum, I'd be happy to own either of them, though.

OK, Domenichino finally scraped together 3 votes, but Dossi brought 3 x 3 and will survive into the next round.

Voting is still open on Duccio and Van Dyck, if you're late to the show.

And with nobody else plunging into the voting pool, Van Dyck wins a squeaker on the last two votes, 7-5.
