Through the tiebreak mechanism, Böcklin has jumped down to the spot that would have gone to the winner of Brauner v. Broodthaers, had there been a winner. A fond farewell to Victor and Marcel -- and let's see who will win the presumably fairly strenuous honor of facing the winner of J. Bruegel v. Bronzino in the next round!
Arnold Böcklin
1827 - 1901
German; worked in Italy
- Lost to Umberto Boccioni in Round 1.
- Tied with Sir Peter Blake in First Round Elimination.
- Squeaked by Marcel Broodthaers in First Round Elimination Tiebreak by a two-vote swing. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!!!
Daniel Buren
1938 -
French
Defeated Sir Edward Burne-Jones in an amazing come-from-behind single-vote victory in Round 1. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!!!
Beaten by Pieter Bruegel -- no shame in that -- in Round 2.
Vote for the artist of your choice in the comments, or any other way that works for you. Commentary and links to additional work are welcome. Polls open for at least one month past posting, but likely much longer.

French! Large installations! We're on a roll!

Gotta go with Böcklin.
Böcklin for me today, though I might go the other way in a different mood. I love those guys and whatever they're doing on a grey day down below the decrepit castle.
I'll take Bocklin. I know he's kind of an Isle of the Dead specialist, but he's the best one ever.
Here's an email vote for Bocklin -- "How I love the Isle of the Dead"
And I'm going for Böcklin myself, too, not least on account of that self-portrait that isn't showing up in his Tournament paintings yet.
Buren.

My oh my, Böcklin took five straight votes to come from behind and take the lead, only to end up tied for the second time -- the first two-tie artist of the Tournament -- when the late votes swung against him. That locks up this branch of the brackets until the next Left Bracket Second Round tie comes along to mix things back up!
