  1. Well, the box stuff is nice, but Church's paintings make my eyes pop out. Church.

  2. I think I'm going with Church. I feel bad about abandoning Cornell, but he's always been one of those artists I like more in theory than practice.

  3. Oh, and the Claesz/church link goes to the Agasse/Algardi matchup

  4. Sorry, Cornell, I like you a lot, but... Fred Church all the way! I love him, I love him, I love him.

  5. No relation to Frank Church of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, I suppose?

  6. Church

Cornell is interesting. Church is magnificant!

  7. OK, the Churches are damn good, but that top one especially could use some fighting dinosaurs. Perhaps near the edge of the cliff. Which makes me wonder: if alive today, would he be working on Hollywood blockbusters?

My man Joseph would definitely not be. Perhaps he would be distracted by adoring throngs of scrapbooking ladies? He wielded the modest, introspective superpower of obsessively putting one thing next to another. And, yes, he has my vote.

  8. Damn … I love them both. Can I vote for Church and Cornell since I abstained from other votes? this isn't fair to have two good ones against each other!

  9. An postal voter feels that the match is cruel and painful, but breaks for Church.

  10. I'll go Cornell, I think. For now.

  11. This IS a cruel and unusual matchup. But sorry Cornell, your stuff is neat/cool/clever, Church is absolutely stunning/amazing/awesome!

    Church it is.

  12. Wow! It was a powerhouse match for this crowd, but Mr. Church prevails and will have the chance to match brushes with Cezanne in Round Four.

Joe Cornell drops to the Left Bracket, and will have to overcome whoever emerges from among Champaigne, De Chirico, Christo, and Chagall if he is to make it to the semifinals. No one ever said an art tournament would be easy.
