The Infinite Art Tournament, Left Bracket Second Round: Canova v. Burra!

Antonio Canova
1757 - 1822
Italian

Put up a fair number of votes in losing to big-name Caravaggio in Round 1.
Took out Robert Campin in First Round Elimination.

Edward Burra
1905 - 1976
British

Beat 20th century Italian abstract artist Alberto Burri in an amazing come-from-behind victory in Round 1.
Lost in heavy voting to France's Gustave Caillebotte Round 2.

Vote for the artist of your choice in the comments, or any other way that works for you. Commentary and links to additional work are welcome. Polls open for at least one month past posting, but likely much longer.

  1. I think I like Canova better here! Burra's paintings are a bit too visually cluttered for my liking.

  2. Canova for me (OMG AGREEING WITH MORGAN!) - I can't stop looking at the lounging lady, or rather what she's lounging on, and marveling at the marble silk and satin.

  3. Burra. I'm really hard to please with sculpture, even sculpture of beautiful naked ladies nuzzling each other.

  4. Much as I love naked stone women, I have to go with Burra and his 35 cent Mexican Chile - "in sizzling pot!"

  5. Hey, I find I've got a mild preference for Canova! Not quite my thing, but he did it exceedingly well. There's lots I like and don't like about Burra's paintings, but somehow they just don't quite come together for me.

  6. I can't decide. They are so different. Well, um...hmmm, Canova! (joke--no darts thrown)

  7. Like but don't love both of them; the last Canova is my favorite of all of them, though, so I'm going with him.

  8. It's hard not to vote for the idyllic mythological sculptures, but I'm not going to (by which I mean I am voting for burra)

  9. Canova for me (OMG AGREEING WITH ELIZABETH!!)

  10. Here's a postal vote for Canova.

  11. It takes a run of three late votes to pull it off, but Canova comes from behind to take down Burra 8-6.

Canova will advance to take on Calder in Second Round Elimination.
