Jan Bruegel (the Elder)
Bronzino
While pretty, Bruegel is significantly more visually cluttered, whereas Bronzino pulls off simple aesthetics in a pleasing way. I particularly like his top piece! I will vote for Bronzino.
Bruegel! I do like the Bronzino also, but.... Bruegel!
I've seen that middle Bronzino before, and it's always seemed like the cherub over on the left who's copping a feel has an extraordinarily long neck with more vertebrae than most of us have. It always seemed odd in a painting where otherwise, all the bodies seem pretty realistically body-ish.
Bruegel. I like the images-within-images.
Breugel - seconded on Elizabeth's images within images comment.
Bruegel … but really I don't like either.
Bronzino. I think I like them BECAUSE of the improbable anatomy and general sense of alienness.
Hmm, ack! Okay, Bronzino, because "Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time" is just so great, esp all those background figures, and maybe especially the reverse-handed, honeycomb-holding, half-monster girl.
Bruegel the younger Elder for me. I like those paintings crowded with art, animals, or (even) flowers.
There's a vote-by-email for Bronzino.
I quite like Bronzino. He's a strong B-list artist, which means I've had the privilege of seeing a number of his paintings live -- there are enough of them around so that most of the regional musees out here in the North American provinces have one or two in their collection. They are always terrific.
However, I vote Jan Bruegel, due to specialness (and if I'm honest with myself, probably a little adherence to the family brand.
Bruegel.
Seeing Bruegel first made Bronzino seem somewhat underwhelming - I like 'em both, but Bruegel takes my vote!
And after more then a year of voting, the brackets have unfrozen and Bronzino can finally be taken out of his misery: Jan Bruegel takes the contest by 9 votes to 5, and will finally get to return to Tournament action next week!
