The Infinite Art Tournament, Round 1: Deacon v. Degas!

At first I was gravitating towards Degas, because I had heard that he was good and, y'know, peer pressure. Then I was gravitating towards Deacon, because I'll be darned if that second one isn't the nicest-looking abstract sculpture installment I've seen. But then I looked at the Degas paintings more closely, and it's surprising how much emotion the second one conveys. I'll vote Degas.
Degas is amazing and his paintings bring me into a whole different world, but I seem to be more in the mood for the loving definition of form and shape in 3 dimensions, this morning, so my vote goes to Deacon.
Btw, if you haven't seen Degas' pastel works in person and are someplace that has some--NYC say--it's worth taking a look. I always remembering wandering into a room of Degas in the Met in NYC and getting lost in the pastel strokes overlying one another. Yet another texture thing that is hard or impossible to capture in photographs viewed on computer screens!
I used to be fairly hard on Degas, but I like him more and more as I see more of his stuff in the meatspace, and as I see more of his stuff that doesn't involve the ballet. Him.
