  1. Difficult matchup in that they're so similar, but I'm going with Constable because of the detail on the cathedral walls.

  2. Well, interesting matchup indeed! Cole has a need for grandeur that I find, well, a bit off-putting, if admirably done. Maybe I just find the human scale of the English countryside more to my liking. In any case, I'm going with Constable.

  3. Cole - but I'm a sucker for the Hudson River School.

  4. That he made a picture of Daniel Boone, tips me to Cole.

  5. I prefer Constable's style, but they are both great!

  6. Love great American landscapes having seen some lovely vast country in the west. Cole.

  7. Ah, a non-ridiculous match-up! I'm partial to Cole.

  8. Cole - I love me some melodramatic landscape painting, whether of the Hudson River school or any of the enormous, and very cool western landscapes of folks like Bierstadt. Plus, USA, USA, USA!

  9. A very tough match-up, as ridiculous (to an extent) as comparing oranges and oranges! Between the early 19th Century landscape masters, I'll be unpatriotic and throw in for Mr. Constable. Love the draughtsmanship in the second image. Plus the cows, of course.

  10. Constable for me - the detail in Salisbury Cathedral is astonishing and Constable paints trees as well as anyone.

  11. Constable, for the worker at the lock and the cows in the creek, though I do think he should have had the couple close the gate behind themselves.

Plus, is it just me, or in that stormy Cole one, aren't the shadows pretty inconsistent? Some of the trees have shadows going left, and some have shadows going almost straight down, and some are very long and eveningish, and others are more noontime.

  12. Cole! Colecolecole

I like the way he contrasted color, it is soothing and interesting

  13. And it's... a tie! 7-7. Constable and Cole will reappear in a few years to try again against some of the successful play-in artists.
