ReplyDeleteChagall! I do like Champaigne more than some of his contemporaries that we've seen, and I like the sexy sandals in that Last Supper. Maybe someday we can do a tourney, or a lineup, of Last Suppers?

ReplyDeleteQuite to my surprise, I'm going with Champaigne. Hands! Folds! Profile-Frontal-Profile! Chagall is a wonderful colorist, and consistently wonderful. Yet, Champaigne.

Chagall, because, just, wow! And that really impresses me because the 20th century isn't really my native land, aesthetically. He does all sorts of things I wouldn't normally like, but he makes me want to move into a Chagall museum so I can fall asleep surrounded by his paintings.
ReplyDeleteAnd Champaigne is brilliant, and in most other rounds, he'd get my vote based on the fabric creases alone, though I suppose some purists would say that if somebody paints The Last Supper and your eyes are immediately drawn to the folds in the tablecloth, somebody's heart might not have been in their job. Still, much loveliness.
Champaigne deserves a vote for his balance.
ReplyDeleteChampaigne's comeback never quite caught him up with Chagall's strong early lead, and the twentieth century dude makes it to the Second Round and a tough faceoff with Cezanne, 8-5. Voting is closed in this match.
