I like the first guy but it's more of a style and era that I like more than talent because talent when it comes to painting is something I know nothing about. Are those first ones paintings? You see. I know nothing.
I'm about to read that first chapter of that running book. Thanks for the recommendation! If I like it, I'll buy it for 8 bucks new.
Buren. If I had any actual ability to jump lightly from column to column, that's what I would want to do.
Normally, I love me some pre-Raphaelites, but Burne-Jones is giving me a bit of the fantods. Chick #1 is clearly drugged out of her gourd. (I was going to say she was dead, but maybe she's just dead to the world.) And I have to imagine that B-J had the guy holding his sword point up between his legs originally and then thought, No, that's a little too phallic. I'll dial it back a bit and have the naked sword pointing down instead.
And the women in painting #2 have apparently been selected for some 19th-century reality show where all of the women have to be the same height and shape and have the same jawline and where the normal laws of motion are suspended.
Sir Edward Burne-Jones. I admired his hyper-romantic almost gothic style for quite a while without really knowing who he was. Stripes will only get you so far.
Last second flip flop again. Candida's criticisms of Burne-Jones are just too spot on (I love the reality show one). I'm switching my vote to the geometrically mesmerizing Buren.
Wow, it's a thrilling rollercoaster of a bout between the French Conceptualist and Birmingham's Pre-Raphaelite! Counting Dr. Ken's vote in favor of Buren, and with Chuckdaddy's 11th-hour change of mind, we end up with Buren on top... by a single point. How will he do against Flemish master Pieter Brueghel? Burne-Jones, but I do like brightly painted interiors and mirrors as well.
