BIERSTADT!!!!! Sometimes I can get into actual sculptures (a Rodin exhibit in my youth comes to mind) but pictures of sculptures don't do anything for me, and I've never seen any Berninis in real life. Also, I don't care for depictions of rape (or call it ravishment if you like). Prefer color to form. And would choose those Bierstadts over a lot of things I like better than white sculptures of people doing stuff to limp ladies.
Both are absolutely fabulous, wouldn't want to see either lose, but the paintings you provided for Bierstadt are breathtaking. Beirstadt all the way (but, hey, looks like I'm in the minority, so if Bernini gets through, I'm OK with that.)
I don't think I've ever seen that top Bierstadt painting before, and I really dig it, despite and/or because of the fact it reminds me of, and I hate to say this, but, you know, that time portal Dr. McCoy disappears into in The City on the Edge of Forever? Only as seen on a prettier planet, through the lens of a vastly superior special effects budget?
However, I will not let that distract me from the fact that Bernini...well, mercy, it's STONE sprung writhing to life, innit? AND we're not even looking at his architecture, which is just as stellar...so, even though the Baroque isn't my fave era, he's totally got my vote.
This is only going to get harder in subsequent rounds, assuming we get there. Bernini may be the most amazing sculptor I've bumped into. Ol' Bierstadt is going to have to try his luck in the left-hand bracket. Or that's my vote, at least.
Bernini brings more life to stone than anybody I can think of off the top of my head. Granted, this is damning with faint praise since I don't know a lot of sculpture, but that's just accidental. I bet if I knew lots of sculptors, I'd feel the same way.

These two artist are not in the same galaxy! Bernini is a wold treasure, Bierstadt a great American painter.

I agree, Bierstadt is nice, but it's Bernini! Bernini!! Bernini!!! all the way!

ReplyDeleteI didn't mention it back in July, but this contest has been closed for quite a while, with Bernini triumphant in a fair fight.
