ReplyDeleteI realize there's a tie glumping things up (By which, I mean making everything fantastically confusing), but can't this round be decided? It's not parallel to the tie (my way of looking at it).
ReplyDeleteNo can do, Chuckdaddy. Until the Fra Angelico/Anguissola tangle is cleared up -- hopefully, to be frank, with them both winning through -- there's no opponent for Appel/Arp to play. It looks like it will be da Massina v. Archipenko, eventually, but there's no point kicking off THAT match because the winner will have to wait for the resolution of [Appel/Arp] v. whomever. In the meantime, I like having "#2/125" still active to remind me of the time before I realized that the tournament was going to have 1024 artists instead of 1000, before I realized that it was going to have 512 instead of 1024. And I also like knowing that it bugs you.

ReplyDeleteties be worked out that happen outside of round one? I've been assuming (or maybe you told me) that we are waiting for a different same-round tie, and then a swap of matches will ensue. But I wouldn't put it past you to have something much more confusing up your sleeve.
Inexperience. It was my first tie, and I didn't realize that there was no point in closing down voting on it.
ReplyDeleteWe are indeed waiting for another same-round tie. Let's say it's Clouet and Cornell (although it won't be): what would happen would be that the "upper" artist in each bracket (Fra Angelico and Clouet) would duke it out to advance on the "upper" bracket spot (ie, the winner would face Arcimboldo in the Third Round and the loser would face the winner of Appel/Arp). Anguissola would similarly go up against Cornell down there among the "C" artists.
For all that it sounds kind of arcane, it's a pretty reasonable tie breaker. Having said that, I like the way it makes possible sudden crazy sideways jumps on the brackets. Since I really like both the Fra and Anguissola, it's tempting to think of scenarios where I could use my vote (or withhold it) to clinch a tie between a pair of weaklings...

ReplyDeleteAnd this antiquity of the tournament -- "Loser's Bracket" indeed -- finally drags to a close. In the end, Antonello da Messina wiped the floor with Andrea del Sarto, 12-2, while Appel dispatched Arp without too much ado, 10-5.
