  1. Painful to vote for either, but ARP gets the default vote.

  2. Oh, Arcimboldo, definitely. What is that second Arp piece, a tooth on a plate? The fruity men are much more toothsome.

  3. Fruit! Arcimboldo by a long shot.

  4. Don't like either, but Archimboldo is way more creative, so point to him.

  5. Well, Arcimboldo is a bit of a one-liner, of course, and Arp's range and influence aren't really captured with these two selections. But a friend once sent me a series of Arcimboldo postcards, the four seasons, and it was a delightful and memorable event. And, let's face it, Arp wouldn't have been nearly as much fun. So Arcimboldo for me.

  6. ARCIMBOLDO!!!!!

mrs.5000, I certainly don't know much about art (WAYYYY less than you), but I guess I don't understand how Arcimboldo's technique makes him more of a one-liner than, say, Mondrian's blocks make him a one-liner--or is he one too? I guess what I'm asking is where the line falls between having a signature style or technique (which I may well be blurring inappropriately) and being a shallow or undeveloped artist....

  7. Fruit! You modernists have noting on that.

  8. Arp, because those vegetable people give me the creeps. They're not just made of vegetables, they're in a creepy light, too. I'm sure Arp has something better than the pictures you showed us, which are, admittedly, almost as bad as creepy vegetable people peering out of the dark.

  9. @Candida: Well, I guess I'd admire Mondrian more if he didn't stick to his rules quite so insistently. But with Arcimboldo there's a jokiness to the whole it's-a-man!/it's vegetables! approach that is hard to get away from, even when you are noticing the sublime details. Where that line falls that you refer to, I dunno...but I do think Arcimboldo does really amazing things within an odd genre.

  11. Arcimboldo, because those fruit-men give me the creeps! They're awesome, so wrong they're right.

  12. Arp. Arcimboldo really explored something that didn't need exploring.

  13. I'm going to roll with Archmboldo, because I like that he explored something that didn't need exploring. Plus, there was a vote for Arcimboldo on the Facebook repost.
