Coming Events
In Progress -- DorkFest. The DorkFest judges are currently in conclave. Once they have reached a decision, the new Dork and Vice-Dork will be announced in these pages.
Tuesday, November 3rd -- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The Academy Theater. Mrs.5000 and I are in the habit of watching the movies of the Harry Potter franchise as they come down the pike. By "down the pike," I mean "when they get to the second-run theaters." Mrs.5000 and I don't do first-run theaters. Note: This movie may be playing at other dates and locations as well.
Friday, November 6th -- The Dark Season. This date is half-way between the Fall Equinox and the Spring Solstice, and is thus the first day of the darkest, grimmest, most horrible quarter of the year for those of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere. Note: Those of you who live in the Southern Hemisphere may be laughing now, but let's talk in May.
Sunday, November 8th -- Willamette Falls Symphony "Russian Adventure" Concert. Oregon City's amateur orchestra presents a concert headlined with Tchaikovsky's loveable and popular 5th Symphony. I talked about the WFS back here. Ten bucks gives you the chance to support a community orchestra and, as a special bonus, check out the trumpet stylings of frequent L&TM5K commenter Ben.
Sunday, November 8th -- Discussion begins for the Early Modern Underground's Collaborative Online Reading of the play ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore, by the approximate Shakespeare contempory John Ford. The EMU is wrangled by frequent L&TM5K commenter Jennifer and is an inclusive group; I'll be joining them for this reading.
Saturday, November 14th -- Consonare Chorale "Music of the Spheres" Concert. Classical and semi-classical vocal pieces on the themes of "the grandeur of the universe and smallness of the individual coexisting simultaneously." Featuring frequent L&TM5K commenter Kate.
Friday, November 20th -- Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" Concert. I really can't recommend Portland's semi-professional orchestra highly enough. Great sound, great venue, great value. This concert of Shakespeare-inspired works is also the official kickoff event for the Renaissance Man Shakespeare-reading project.
November 21st - November 29th -- Home Improvement Fest 2009. Mrs.5000 & I will take a one-week "staycation" in a spasm of labor thrown at the maintainance and improvement of Castle5000. In specific, we will attempt to finally make some discernable progress on the venerable upstairs bathroom project.
Thursday, November 26th -- American Thanksgiving
Thursday, February 11th -- Portland Opera, Cosi Fan Tutte. Hey, it's still a long ways off, but this production of my favorite opera should be awesome. And the nice thing about opera is that the seats right up close to the stage and off to the side -- where I just happen to like to sit -- are considered undesireable. They are at the fire-sale price of $25. Tickets aren't formally on sale yet, but if you call the box office and ask nicely, they'll hook you up.
- If you would like to add your event to the michael5000 Community Calendar, say so in the comments.
- If you would like to remove your event from the michael5000 Community Calendar, fair enough.
- If you would like to join Mrs.5000 and/or I for any of the above events, let us know! This applies in particular to Home Improvement Fest 2009.
As much as I have wanted to see the pacific north east and do truley love a plumbing project alas the British Home office has my passport and have told me not to expect it back for up to 6 months. Fed ex e-mailed to say you should have your golden syrup today, almost made the friday deadline but didn't. Maybe you can make some flap jacks on your stay cation and I will be there in spirit.
ReplyDeleteI meant north west one should not try to comment from one's mobile phone
ReplyDeleteGosh darn it....I am just THE best dry wall mudder you never met! But I think I have to wash my hair that day...
ReplyDeleteDamn! I should be living in Portland.
ReplyDeleteDear M5K,
ReplyDeleteGood going on the calendar. We will probably want to set up specific blocks of time for the droves of volunteers during Home Improvement Fest, lest the bathroom get unbearably crowded. (We've actually got the drywall texturing done, Elaine. We really could have used you...um, some months ago.)
But what I actually wanted to point out is that according to your mission statement, you are still aiming to be the "preeeminent provider of difficult pop quizzes on arbitrary topics." Is the field really that slack? Or are you just waiting for a little clapping and stomping to bring the quizzes back onstage?
And how's that conclave doing,btw?
@Carto: We are admittedly a little shallow on the Ohio coverage.
ReplyDelete@mrs.5000: You are right, as always. SO LISTEN UP EVERYBODY: WHEN SIGNING UP TO VOLUNTEER FOR CASTLE5000 UPKEEP, PLEASE INDICATE YOUR PREFERENCE FOR THE DAYS YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER, AS WELL AS YOUR PREFERRED SHIFTS (MORNING, AFTERNOON, EVENING, OR GRAVEYARD).
Also, good point about the mission statement. It might be time for another retreat.
@Yankee in England: A box has arrived! It was most generous and, may I say, extremely dorky of you to go to such lengths to aid our flapjacking efforts!
ReplyDeleteMay I suggest that you add the Super Colossal Crafty Wonderland running from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on December 13? I will be among the 200 vendors at the Oregon Convention Center showing (and hopefully selling) my wares. As an honored patron of Ma Nao Books, you would be appropriately fussed over and holiday cheered.
ReplyDeleteOh, and of course it's FREE, but by all means bring your wallet.
@mrs 5000 add some dried cranberries and pecans to the flapjacks very yummy. I was addicted to bourbon creams when I first moved over here so completly understand food addictions.
ReplyDelete@Margaret: We'll get it in the December calendar.
ReplyDeleteI keep forgetting to tell you that the latest HP film is pretty well crap. The book is amazing.. but even the most devoted fans admit that the movie is just a teen-angst/romance fest. I recommend a pitcher of Heffeweisen and your favorite pizza... oh and seats in the back of the theater for you & the Mrs. =P
ReplyDelete@Reb: I regret to inform you that, leaving the theater last night, I remarked to Mrs.5000: "Well, that one was a whole order of magnitude over all the others." I thought it was very entertaining, very moody, smart, and far and away the best of the six. I don't know whether this will please you or send you into further paraoxysms* of despair.
ReplyDeleteOh, and seats ALWAYS in the front of the theater. Ideally, I like my nose pressed against the screen. More emersive that way.
Seriously?????
ReplyDeleteWell, maybe in this case, not having read the book helps.
add to calendar? monday nov09, morocco photo review & presentation at 23 sandy. :)
ReplyDeletei decided after the second movie that i had to stop reading the harry potter series until i had seen all the movies. then i can go back and enjoy the books instead of gnashing my teeth at what they left out of the movies. this makes the movies much less gnash-worthy, but also not very exciting. except snape!
