The Thursday Quiz XCV

The Thursday Quiz!

The Thursday Quiz is a twelve item is-it-or-isn't-it test of your knowledge, reasoning, stamina, and moxie!

Remember always the Fundamental Rules of the Thursday Quiz:

1. The Thursday Quiz is a POP quiz. No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. Violators will never be able to look at themselves in the mirror again.

2. Don't get all stressed out about it! It's supposed to be fun!

Compositions and Composers

Here we have twelve well-known compositions of classical and jazz music. And, for a change, I didn't make any of them up! Not all of them are matched with the right composer, however.

Which pieces are matched with the correct composer?
1. 1812 Overture, Tchaikovsky

2. Flemenco Sketches, Mozart

3. Grand Canyon Suite, Ferde Grofe

4. Peer Gynt Suite, Grieg

5. The Pines of Rome, Respighi

6. the Planets, Holst

7. Prelude to the Afternoon of a Fawn, Vivaldi

8. Rhapsody in Blue, Miles Davis

9. The Rite of Spring, Beethoven

10. ‘Round Midnight, Thelonius Monk

11. Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov

12. The Shoes of the Fisherman’s Wife are Some Jiveass Slippers, Duke Ellington

  13. I've got 45 minutes until the end of Thursday on the west coast, but it doesn't matter because it's music, so I'm doomed. All answers purely on whim. Did I beat a deaf monkey?

  15. Michael never told us who won. Were we all that bad?

  16. Scoring should be as easy as rolling off a blog. Except for the jazz ones, pretty easy quiz, wasn't it? M5000 must be gittin' soft in his old age. Or he's still out birthday partyin'....

  17. Alright, here we are back from Ashland, Oregon, home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and of Big Brother5000.

So, let's see, there was a Quiz...

    1. 1812 Overture, Tchaikovsky -- SURE.

    2. Flemenco Sketches, Mozart -- NAH. "Flamenco Sketches" is more of a Miles Davis thing.

    3. Grand Canyon Suite, Ferde Grofe -- YEP.

    4. Peer Gynt Suite, Grieg -- YEP.

    5. The Pines of Rome, Respighi -- YEP.

    6. the Planets, Holst -- YEP.

    7. Prelude to the Afternoon of a Fawn, Vivaldi -- NAH, that's Debussy.

    8. Rhapsody in Blue, Miles Davis -- NAH, that's George Gershwin.

    9. The Rite of Spring, Beethoven -- NO, Stravinsky.

    10. ‘Round Midnight, Thelonius Monk -- YES.

    11. Scheherazade, Rimsky-Korsakov -- YES.

    12. The Shoes of the Fisherman’s Wife are Some Jiveass Slippers, Duke Ellington -- NAH, Duke was too dignified for that kind of title. That's a Charles Mingus composition.

  18. Which means that Elizabeth takes her fourth Gold Star, sweeping the answers right out of the box. Elaine, right behind her, takes the Silver Star, her second and her sixth Star overall.

It looked for quite a while there that Ben, newcomer edith b., and mhwitt were going to place with 11/12 correct, but at the last second the wily DrSchnell snuck in with another perfect slate of answers, snatched away the Blue Star, and dashed their hopes and dreams. No doubt they will be seething with resentment for quite some time to come.

  19. @Elizabeth: I am! Thanks for checking!

@Elaine: I did know that. Unfortunately, we're looking for girls' names. "Ottorina Boone"? Works for me....

@Aviatrix: "Also yes/no answers are less fun..." After 95 Quizzes you bring this up?
