The Thursday Quiz LXXXIV

The Thursday Quiz!

The Thursday Quiz is a twelve item is-it-or-isn't-it test of your knowledge, reasoning, stamina, and moxie!

Remember always the Fundamental Rules of the Thursday Quiz:

1. The Thursday Quiz is a POP quiz. No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. Violators will never be able to look at themselves in the mirror again.

2. Don't get all stressed out about it! It's supposed to be fun!

Gods and Goddesses II

Some of the following are gods and goddesses of various cultures, more or less accurately described. Some, however, are not! You must endure the tedium of separating the Is from the Isn't!

1. Aberystwyth -- Greek goddess of the hunt and wild things, and the moon.

2. Abundantia -- Roman goddess of good fortune, abundance, and prosperity.

3. Alerick -- the Norse god of mischief, chance, and war.

4. Amaterasu -- the Shinto goddess of the sun and, according to strict Shinto belief, ancestress of the Imperial Household of Japan. She is often thought of as the unofficial primary god of Shinto.

5. Anubis -- Greek god of war, murder, and bloodshed.

6. Aphrodite -- the Greek goddess of love, lust, and beauty.

7. Apollo -- the Roman god of god of light and the sun, archery, medicine and healing, music, poetry, and the arts.

8. Apollo -- the Greek god of music, prophecies, poetry, archery, light, and truth.

9. Ares -- Egyptian dog or jackal god of embalming who watches over the dead.

10. Astarte -- Eastern Mediterranean goddess of fertility, sexuality, and war. She was was the principal goddess of the Phoenicians, but regarded as a female demon of lust in Hebrew monotheism.

11. Aten -- the Egyptian sun god worshipped as a monotheistic deity under the Pharaoh Amenhotep IV, who took the name Akhen-aten.

12. Axelqlatl -- Aztec god of mercy and the harvest.

Answer time.

The A-List gods are as follows:

1. Aberystwyth -- NO. It's a town in Wales.

2. Abundantia -- YES. It was supposed to be an intuitive gimme! But nobody trusts me...

3. Alerick -- NO. Aleric, no K usually, was King of the Visigoths and responsible for one of those good old fashioned sacks of Rome. Interestingly, this was my father's choice for my own name.

4. Amaterasu -- YES. And having learned this, I now know one thing about Shinto.

5. Anubis -- NO. I switched places with him and Ares.

6. Aphrodite -- ABSOLUTELY.

7. Apollo, the Roman -- YES.

8. Apollo, the Greek -- ALSO YES. I'd never noticed that before.

9. Ares -- NO. I switched places with him and Anubis.

10. Astarte -- YEP.

11. Aten -- YEP.

12. Axelqlatl -- NOPE. Just a name I made up hoping it would look Aztec. I don't think the Aztecs were big on mercy in their religious life.

Elizabeth and Eversaved looked good with 10/12, but it turned out you needed to get 11/12 to go home with any swag today.

First across the finish line was la gringissima, who takes the TQLXXXIV Gold Star! It's the third Gold Star in her crowded trophy case.

Even more jam-packed is Quiz perennial Mrs.5000, who grabs her 10th Silver Star.

Lamanyana grabbed the Blue Star, his first, and annie took home her first Green.

Guess I'll trust you next time ...

Nichim said...

I hereby submit that I knew Romans also paid homage to Apollo, but they had a different name for the god of the sun particularly (Helios) and so I believe that there's room for argument that my answer to 7 is correct. But since I suspected enough trickiness on your part that I got a couple of supposedly easy ones wrong anyway, I won't push the point. Of course I know this "oh, I'm not being tricky" business is just a trick - trying to get us to let our guards down so you can thwart us next time.

Elaine said...

So, there WAS an "Abundtia." O, we of little faith.
Though, M5000, you get the trust you've earned, right?

Voron X said...

1. No, that's Artemis
2. Yes.
3. Don't know. Tyr was war, Loki was mischief. Don't know this joker. Want to say yes, but we're shy on nos. So NO.
4. Yes.
5. No, that's Ares.
6. Yes.
7. Yes.
8. Yes.
9. No, that's Anubis.
10. Yes, cf. Astaroth, the Goetic "demon".
11. Yes.
12. No clue. going to guess yes.

Voron X said...

I got 11/12 too! Couldn't the last one have been about Tezcatlipoca, maybe mixing him up with Quetzlcoatl, something like, saying "Quetzlcoatl - Priests of this Aztec God of the Smoking Mirror sacrificed their victims by cutting out their hearts."
