The Monday Quiz LXVIII

Name That Theme!
This time, though, the theme is pretty damn obscure. If anybody gets it, I'll be dazzled. Dazzled!

1. What very famous athlete is shown here in his youth?

2. What noted actor is shown here in his youth?

3. Who is this leading figure in... in... well, American letters, I suppose you could say?

4. Why, it's the legendary entertainer _______________!

5. Who is this "Rough and Ready" gentleman?

Submit your answers, and your best guess at the theme, in the comments.

15 comments:

  1. 1. Cassius Clay, later to become Muhammad Ali.
    2. George Clooney
    3. Hunter S. Thompson
    4. Loretta Lynn
    5. Zachary Taylor

And the theme... is... driving me insane. Oh well, I'll check back in later in the unlikely event that inspiration strikes.

  6. 1. Cassius Clay, aka Muhammad Ali
    2. George Clooney
    3. Hunter S. Thompson. Incidentally, I just got back from a week in Las Vegas for the AAG meetings. Unlike Thompson, however, I did not have a trunk full of pharmeceuticals, so my experience was likely somewhat different. But frankly, in Las Vegas, it's pretty friggin' weird even without drugs.
    4. Loretta Lynn
    5. Zachary Taylor
Theme: A cross between an elephant and a rhinoceros. What's a cross between an elephant and a rhinoceros, you ask? Elephino!

  11. 1 Gotta be Muhammed Ali, still signing his autograph as "Cassius."
2 You know, I really couldn't tell you. Is that Sylvester Stallone?
3 For some reason I'm thinking that's the gonzo Hunter S. Thompson.
    4 Loretta Lynn?
5 No one I'd be thrilled to have over for dinner, I can say from his expression. Andrew Jackson? Do we even have photographs of Andrew Jackson?

I am guessing the theme is "famous Kentuckians."

  12. That looks nothing like George Cloo--- OK, I guess it does. Still, I like my goofy idea that Sly Stallone went through a pretty-boy in polka dots phase.

  14. So, yeah, you're looking at Mohammed Ali, George Clooney, Hunter S. Thompson, Loretta Lynn, and Zachary Taylor.

And all of them were, indeed, "country bumpkins who got all up in everybody's bidness and went all classy and shit." Also, coal miners' daughters. Also, from Kentucky. The mystery theme was "Famous Kentuckians."
