The Thursday Quiz LXXIII

The Thursday Quiz!

The Thursday Quiz is a twelve item is-it-or-isn't-it test of your knowledge, reasoning, stamina, and moxie!

Remember always the Fundamental Rules of the Thursday Quiz:

1. The Thursday Quiz is a POP quiz. No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. Violators will never be able to look at themselves in the mirror again.

2. Don't get all stressed out about it! It's supposed to be fun!

Natural Features Around the World

Each of the places listed below is matched with a number on the world map. For each place, IS IT or ISN'T it accurately located?

Ooops. As the early test takers have noticed, there is no #10 on the map. Sorry about that.

Also, it has been called to my attention that it is Thursday, not Monday.

Also, the chief of quality control has been sacked, and we are welcoming applications for the position.

  14. OK, here's the answers:

1: No, that's lake Baikal. The Aral Seas is way over yonder to the west.

2: The Atlas Mountains -- Yes

3: No, that's generally the Balkins. The Caucasus is on the other side of the Black Sea.

    4: The Gobi -- Yes

    5: The Ob -- Yes

6: The Okavango Delta -- YES! This inland delta is one of the most productive bioregions on this here planet!

    7: The Orinoco -- Yes!

8: The "Pyranees" -- no, no...

9: The "Sea of Rhun" is indeed north by northeast from Mordor.

10: I'm an idiot. Sakhalin, though, is that long island north of Japan.

11: Sulawesi is that crazy shaped island in Indonesia. So no.

12: Tierra del Fuego is of course the southern tip of South America. So again, no.

  15. ...which leaves a roundup of certified geography dorks holding all the medals this week. The Calico Cat, claiming her impressive fifth Gold Star, becomes the eighth person to win back-to-back Golds! Will Calico break the curse and win three in a row? We'll find out next week!

Cartophiliac takes his fourth Silver, his 18th Star overall, to the surprise of no one.

Certified map dork dug, who does not like Quizzes, shows again that he can take 'em if he has too; the TQLXXIII Blue Star is his second.

DrSchnell, reading this too late, doubtless grinds his teeth in frustration. Gotta get Thursdays on your calendar, people!

  16. A little catchup from Monday: Mrs.5000 nosed ahead in an increasingly crowded race for the Exclamation Points. She, DrSchnell, and Chance are no longer alone at the top of that chart, however; Karmasartre has scored 8 of the last 12 MQs and la gringissima 9 of the last 14 to get themselves right in the thick of things; Carto is securely in the running as well. Oh! the Excitement!

Oh, and congrats to Jenners and sister jen, whose MQLXIII EPs made them the 59th and 60th humans to win a Monday Quiz.

I refer you to the leaderboard page for additional details.

  17. @Elaine: Sorry about that. Blogger doesn't give you a lot of flexibility with image size, so making a map that would work involved some guesswork.

@Ben: It is also like the lottery in that it should not be played for investment purposes.

@Dug: My map? A load of crap? You wound me, sir. And where were you last Saturday?

    @boo: You are the moxiousest!

@sphi300: Hello, and welcome to the show! With a name like that, I'm pretty sure I'd remember if I'd seen you before.

  18. I demand a recount! I think maybe I got one more correct than your silver medalist. Not that I'm bitter or anything...
Sorry I missed the Saturday one. I saw it early this week and by then it was all commented out and I had nothing new worth saying. Kind of like now.
    Those maps do blow though!

  19. Man, you're right. I've been a day late for weeks now. My chance at a title this go-round are, I suspect, rapidly approaching zero. Must do better..... must do better.....
