The Thursday Quiz LXX

The Thursday Quiz!

This season, the Thursday Quiz is a sequence game. Arrange the ten items in the proper sequence!

Remember always the Fundamental Rules of the Thursday Quiz:

1. The Thursday Quiz is a POP quiz. No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. Violators will lose their internet privileges. All of them. Permanently.
2. As long as you made it this far, you might as well play. It's not all about winning, you know. It's about using your knowledge and reason and making an educated guess. C'mon! It'll be fun!
Classical Music

Yes, it's another of the hot pop-culture topics that explains why the L&TM5K is among the hottest sites on the internet! List these orchestral compositions in chronological order, from earliest to most recent!

A: Adams’ “On the Transmigration of Souls”

B: Beethoven’s Symphony #9

C: Brahms’ Symphony #1

D: Dvorak’s Symphony #9 (“The New World”)

E: Glass’ Violin Concerto #1

F: Gorecki’s Symphony #3 (“Symphony of Sorrowful Songs”)

G: Haydn’s Symphony #104 (“London”)

H: Shostakovich’s Symphony #7 (“Leningrad”)

As random as it gets. I am probably in negative point order here.

  5. You'd think the person whose household classical music CD's were labeled and arranged by year (and color-coded by era) would have an advantage in this sort of contest. Of course, you all know that wasn't MY project. And when's the last time I looked for the Gorecki, anyway?

  10. OK, my extremely attractive and charming friends, here is the answer key:

J: Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” (1723) -- he's the only baroque composer on the list, so he comes first.

Then you have the classicists, of whom Haydn was Beethoven's teacher at one point, and the grand old man of Vienna when Beethoven was the enfant terrible:

    G: Haydn’s Symphony #104 (“London”) -- (1795)

    B: Beethoven’s Symphony #9 -- (1824)

Brahms was wigged out by having to live up to Beethoven's legacy....

    C: Brahms’ Symphony #1 (1854) -- is often called "Beethoven's 10th" because it's such an obvious homage.

    Brahms was Dvorak's mentor:

    D: Dvorak’s Symphony #9 (“The New World”) -- (1893)

Stravinsky shocked Europe, as if a culture on the verge of slaughtering a generation of its men had the right to be shocked by music....

    I: Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” -- (1913)

Shosty reacted to the NEXT war...

    H: Shostakovich’s Symphony #7 (“Leningrad”) -- (1941)

    F: Gorecki’s Symphony #3 (“Symphony of Sorrowful Songs”) -- (1976)

It was a big hit in the 90s, but it was actually written a few years earlier.

    Then:

    E: Glass’ Violin Concerto #1 -- (1987)

Then, Adams reacts to the Sept 11, 2001 attacks:

A: Adams’ “On the Transmigration of Souls” -- (2002)

  11. Rendering the following winners:

DrSchnell, with the only perfect lineup, takes the TQLXX Gold Star!

Kadonkadonk, who so often expresses irritated amazement that people could know this kind of stuff, cooly submits a near-perfect list to claim the Silver.

    Elizabeth takes the Blue.

Karma very nearly had the Silver, but an unfortunate keying error cost him an arbitrary four points. That still gives him enough of a list to claim a Green Star. Greens also go out to leading Portland bookarts stars Mrs.5000 and Fingerstothebone!

    You all rock.

  12. Some highlights: DrSchnell has now taken three Golds in four weeks, only the second time that has happened (Cartophiliac took the Gold in TQs XXIV, XXV, & XXVII). The good doctor is now only one Star behind the man who has topped the leaderboard since TQIII, Rex Parker.

Kadonk's Silver Star is her highest TQ place to date, and follows an MQEP earlier in the week. She is on what we like to call "a roll"!

Elizabeth's Blue is her 9th Star overall, as she threatens to bust her way into the leaderboard top ten.

With their Greens, Mrs.5000 and Karma stay in hot pursuit of Rex and DrSchnell in the third and fourth spots. Fingers breaks a long drought to get a fresh Star for her trophey case.

And belated recognition for Andrea, who took home her very first MQEP this week, becoming the 52nd human to win the Monday Quiz!

    Huzzah!

  13. @d: the entire Biggie ouvre would actually predate Adams' "On the Transmigration of Souls." Regarding Jay-Z, there would be some ambiguity depending on whether you go with "The Blueprint" or "The Black Album" as definitive; one predates and one postdates Adams' composition. 50 Cent can safely be considered to have achieved success after "Transmigration."

  15. I propose that that next Thursday quiz should feature a list of REM albums that we must order from earliest to latest. I propose you call me exactly sixty minutes before you post it so I can be the first to answer.

    Oh, and no Wikiing, etc.

    Deal?
