Shameless Provincialism 2008

----
Holy Crap! It's the 400th Post!
----

Citizens of Rosaria! Let us stand together and recite the rosary of our beloved Bridgetown!

C'mon! You know you want to!

The Green Cathedral of the North that spans from Linnton to the Penninsula, the mighty St. Johns.

The great graceful arc of the Fremont holding Interstate 405 up to the sky.

The industrial rust-red of the Broadway.

The squat blank ancient magnificence of the Steel.

The Burnside, the vortex of the city poised between East and West, North and South.

The Morrison, flat, wide, efficient, and fast.

The beautiful Hawthorne, beloved of bicycles.

The modernist magnificence of the mighty Marquam.

The endless blue line of the Ross Island.

And to the south, the slender death-trap of the Sellwood.

  1. 400th post! That's amazing.

Why not celebrate with a bunch of bridges. I dig you. You're into knowledge and cool shit.

  2. I heart the Burnside bridge, aka the bridge of never-ending repair work.

PS - more Portlandia posts... I miss it there.

  3. I love riding my bike on the Hawthorne. I think I'm going to walk it tomorrow to my job at the World Trade Center.

  5. Congrats on your 400th post! I've seen that when other bloggers reach milestones they often do things like 100 things about me (you could do 400 but maybe it would be too long) or they do a giveaway contest!!!! hint, hint.

    Just kidding. Love this post!

  6. Reminds of Neil Young, upon arriving on Gravina Island (home of the Ketchikan Airport), breaking into his great "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere".

  7. I love our bridges and your descriptions of them. I am especially attached to the Steel, with its ridiculously low pedestrian and bike only bottom deck that has to be raised for every tugboat pushing a gravel barge, and the Broadway, once my constant thoroughfare.

  8. I hate the Sellwood. I NEVER go over it. It's going to cave in someday and I do NOT want to be on it when it does.

Also, the Morrison looks a lot like the Burnside. That always disorients me.

  9. A lovely, simple post. I miss those bridges!

  10. I always say that driving over the Sellwood is one of the most daring things I ever do--it requires taking your life into your own hands, every time.
