The Thursday Quiz XLIV

The Thursday Quiz!

The Thursday Quiz is an "Is It or Isn't It" game. From the list of twelve items, your job is to determine whether each IS or ISN'T a true example of the week's category.

Remember always, the rules are the same no matter where you're from:

No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. The Thursday
Quiz is a POP quiz. Violators will have their language confounded.
This Week's Category is very cosmopolitan!

Words in European Languages

Some of the following sets are equivalent common words in seven European languages: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, and Finnish. In the other sets, things have been twisted and warped in the traditional michael5000 fashion.

Clarification: if a set of words is bogus, it is
predominantly bogus. There are no sets, for instance, where only the Finnish word is wrong. Shame on you for even thinking of such a thing.

For the accurate sets, provide the equivalent word in English. For the bogus sets, just mark 'em as "bogus"!

4. bogus, I think. I've always only heard Doktor in German.
5. golf--just strange enough to be true.
6. sister
7. bogus--I thought it was "moon" at first, but that last entry (kuu) sounds too much like cow, as in ...jumped over the...
8. calculator--only if counting plurals is OK (Komputmachinen would be plural).
9. country (political)
10. dog
11. city
12. sun

I only sort of know two of the languages represented here, so this was hard.

Argh! I am too late! And this type is a fun one. Linguistic. Love that.

#5 you crack me up.

Do we have winners? Of course we have winners! Everyone who takes the Quiz is a winner.

More specifically,

The only perfect score belongs to la gringissima, who thereby takes the TQXLIV Gold Star, her first. This completes her collection of all four Stars, making her the 11th Quiz legend to finish the sweep.

Mrs.5000 takes the Silver; with six in her collection, she is now locked in a tie with Rex Parker for total number of Silver Stars accumulated.

And taking her sixth Blue Star, Karin now has more Blues to her name than any other contestant. She is tied for fourth on the leaderboard for lifetime total number of Stars, with 11.

For more bizarrely detailed statistics, visit the L&TM5K Quiz Leaderboard.

Yay! My name in lights! I'm so vain.

And, planned or not, I love that 6 and 7 combined form Sister Moon (is nothing like the sun), a lyric in a moody Sting song which probably refers to something in literature or mythology, but to me just makes me think of Sting. All I ever need, really. So thanks. :)
