  2. Ha! I remembered! I remembered!

    1. This is definitely propaganda. Stalin?

    2. This beautiful face full of so much care is FDR

    3. Teddy Roosevelt--I think of him as late 19th, but I guess he spanned the two centuries

    4. Um--Cesar Franco? Wild guess because it would make a lovely visual pun.

    5. Super wild guess. No idea. Looks European. How about Max Planck?

P.S. If you like portraits of famous faces, the most original murder mystery I ever read, which is also considered a serious historical work, Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey, turns around a portrait of Richard III. Very cool.

  3. P.S. If you're gonna be picky about full names, then it's Franklin Delanor Roosevelt, I was just afraid to try to spell Delanor. How'd I do?

  4. I got lazy and decided to just look at everyone's answers instead. (Wow, that was so easy, I'll have to do that more often.) But since no one guessed #5, I'll put in my guess --

    5. Ralph Fiennes

    So there.

    2. Franklin Delano Roosevelt looking very tired.
    3. Teddy Roosevelt
    4. Someone with cool eyebrows dressed up like a Roman bust. Wait, is the flag in the background a hint? Who's a French guy? That one with the airport...Charles de Gaulle?!?

  12. And the winners are,

    1: Stalin

    2: Franklin D. Roosevelt

    3: Theodore Roosevelt

    4: Yes, Charles de Gaulle

and 5: a man who often ends up on the top of global polls of the most important people of the 20th Century. This reflects both a) that he was a very important person in the 20th Century, and b) that some of those Turkish students are both patriotic and highly organized. It's Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, essentially the founder of modern Turkey.

"Ralph Fiennes" was also an acceptable answer.

  13. Which gives us four Exclamation Point winners tonight, despite the relatively small holiday turnout: Chance, Cartophiliac, Karmasartre, and Nichim, all of whom are back-to-back MQ winners, having taken the prize last week as well.

Chance now has nine EPs in his collection, moving him into undisputed second on the all-time list.

  14. I would have failed this, but I just want to point out that the guy who did Charles de Gaulle's portrait also did this. God that makes me happy.
