The Thursday Quiz is an "Is It or Isn't It" game. From the list of twelve items, your job is to determine whether each IS or ISN'T a true example of the week's category.
Remember always that in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make, whatever that means:
No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. The ThursdayThis Week's Category tells you something, it thinks you'll understand. To wit, it wants to hold your hand!
Quiz is a POP quiz. Violators will find themselves on the cutting room floor.
#1 Beatles Singles
Many of their songs are extremely well known, but not all of them were hit singles back in the day. Some of the following made it to #1 on the American charts, but others either weren't singles at all, or never made it to the top 40. Which were the hits?
1. "Get Back"
2. "Here Comes the Sun"
3. "I am the Walrus"
4. "I Feel Fine"
5. "I Want to Hold Your Hand"
6. "The Long and Winding Road"
7. "The Love is the Love"
8. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"
9. "Octopus’s Garden"
10. "Paperback Writer"
11. "Penny Lane"
12. "You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away"
Scream your answers hysterically in the comments.
It seems that I'm the first one to arrive on the scene. Unfortunately, I haven't a clue about any of these.
ReplyDeleteFor a future quiz, make a list of Beatles and Ruttles songs, and you have to tell them apart...

The gaps in my pop-musical knowledge equal the number of holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.

Have you seen Across the Universe? Pretty trippy, I love the soundtrack.
Well, hmmm, this isn't easy. I was a pretty classic adolescent Beatles fan, except not until the mid-70's, and have little or no memory of when they were still together. And by then, of course, it was the day of Album Rock Radio. But here goes.
ReplyDelete1 Get Back--I'm thinking this was the B side to Let it Be. But #1? I'll say yes, what the hell.
2 Here Comes the Sun--yes.
3 I am the Walrus--I don't think so.
4 I Feel Fine--yes, I think so.
5 I Want to Hold Your Hand--definitely.
6 The Long and Winding Road--hmmm. I'll say no.
7 The Love is the Love--you are so full of it. Not a Beatle's song.
8 Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da--Geez. No.
9 Octopus's Garden--I don't think so.
10 Paperback Writer--B side to something, I think. But I'll say no.
11 Penny Lane--definitely. A side to Strawberry Field's B, I think.
12 You've Got to Hide Your Love Away--no

Finally, listening obsessively to my mother's old vinyls pays off.
Hmm.... Looks like I got too esoteric on you again. Well, here's the deal:
ReplyDelete"Get Back," "I Feel Fine," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "Paperback Writer," and "Penny Lane" were all #1 singles for the Beatles in the U.S. So, perhaps surprisingly, was "The Long and Winding Road."
"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" only managed to peak at #49, perhaps because it is extremely annoying.
"I am the Walrus" peaked at #52. Goo-goo-ga-joob.
"You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" and "Here Comes the Sun," both excellent songs, were however not singles. Nor was "Octopus's Garden."
"The Love is the Love" is not a Beatles song at all. I made it up. Doesn't it SOUND like a Beatles song, though?
I am the eggman! I am the eggman! But ~karmasartre~ is the winner of the TQXXVIII Gold Star, scorching the competition with a huge 12/12. It's his first Gold.
ReplyDeleteThree points back, but still in second, is Silver Star winner Mrs.5000. She wins the first back-to-back Silvers since Rex Parker claimed three in a row way back in TQV, TQVI, and TQVII.
And Elizabeth grabs her first piece of Quiz bling with the TQXXVIII Blue Star! She is the 37th person to claim a L&TM5K Quiz award, and the 17th contestant to bring home a Blue Star.
MOTHER FUCKER I HAD THIS ONE!!!
ReplyDeleteActually, even though this was tailor-made for me (I had a Beatles birthday party in 8th grade), I would have only gotten second place (10 out of 12).
I would be prouder, if it wasn't for (a) how proud can you be to almost get second place and (b) the sole reason I did well wasn't b/c of my knowledge- it was b/c I listened to the 20 Greatest Hits of The Beatles a lot as a kid and was always incredulous that Paperback Writer and The Long and Winding Road were on it.
Fortunately, next week when you do your "NBA Basketball Player" Quiz, I will, finally, leave the competition in my dust.
