The Monday Quiz XX

Sport

1. These men are playing ____________.

2. These people are playing ________________.

3. These American women are ________________.

4. These Irish men are ________________.

5. These men are not playing rugby. They are playing ___________________.

Aim well and true, and submit your answers in the comments.

Note: The correct answer for number three and for number four will be the name of a sport (which is in both cases also the active verb form for participating in that sport), not a smart-alecky adjective.

1. Cricket. For a laugh, see Bill Bryson's description of listening cricket radio broadcasts while driving in the Australian countryside in his fine book "In a Sunburned Country."
2. Lacrosse. Did you know that NFL Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown is regarded by many as the greatest Lacrosse player ever?
3. Curling. Sorry, no anecdote.
4. Hot potato.
5. I believe they are playing what we would call "Australian rules football" which the Aussies call "football" or often just "footie." Gotta love those Aussie knicknames! Who else would call the saltwater crocodile, a predator that occasionally eats hikers or campers, "salties."

1. Cricket. Actually quite fun to watch live.

2. Lacrosse. Apparently bad on the knees.

3. Curling. Thought they used brooms, not Swiffers. Ah, America.

4. Using large spoons to hit a baseball.

I honestly did NOT read mhwitt's entry before posting mine, but everyone knows you don't play Hot Potato with spoons. It's forks, or bare hands.

How tempting. No rules concerning the use of Google today. But, still, "not a smart-alecky adjective" on 3 and 4 makes this quiz extra tough.

1 / I think cricket, but I don't recognize the dirt (usually on grass?) and the pitcher-type seems way too close to the batter type (telephoto lens?). Given the number of fans in the seats, cricket makes sense.
2 / LaCrosse.
3 / Curling. Aficionados call the scene pictured a "Curling Bee".
4 / One's a Catholic, one's a Protestant. Not sure which one wears the mask.
5 / Australian Football.

But it would still be cheating... ;-)

Very frustrating. I had the correct answer about the Irish Hurling within 10 seconds after answering Michael's quiz.

Yes, it is tempting...

How do so many of you know what "hurling" is!? I challenge. To me, and any good American, "hurling" involves losing your lunch, preferably anywhere other than a bathroom.

That picture of hurling is insane. Like a bunch of older, fattish, possibly drunk Irishmen decided to break from their soccer game circa 1978 and engage in an impromptu re-enactment of a battle scene from Lord of the Rings. The blue guy is clearly an Orc.

rebel: did you see 'murderball'? awesome documentary.

rex: if you're from an irish (or scottish probably) family, trust me, you know what hurling is.

Michael5000 said...

Damn! I'm with Rex; how do you people know these freaky obscure sports? I had no idea Australian Rules Football was played without the familiar cyberarmor.

Anyhoo, as so many of you have noted, the correct answers are:

1. Cricket, a popular sport in the former British Empire.
2. Lacrosse, a popular sport in Connecticut.
3. Curling, a popular sport... well, a sport in northern North America.
4. Hurling, a legalized form of primal violence in Ireland.
5. and, Australian Rules Football.

Michael5000 said...

Which gives us a virtual Exclamation Point storm. They are going out today to:

Phineas -- his 5th

d -- his fourth, and second in a row.

The Calico Cat -- her second, also back-to-back.

dan -- his second

And three first-time MQ winners:
Critical Bill
TarzanPresley
and cpm.

They are the 41st-43rd contestents to bring home some MQ hardware.

w00t!

Well, I spent 2 weeks in Ireland ( playing golf another unfortunate story) BUT, I did see quite a bit of hurling . . . and from my un-educated vantage point, it's basically like Little League for Irish kids.

darn: i was thinking that last one had to be "bloodball."

I knew them all but the last. And that one looks hardcore. Cool quiz.

I think in the olden dayes of ESPN, when there weren't enough sports to fill 24 hrs., you would see Aussie Rules football at odd hours. Don't know how else I would ever have seen the sport...

Rebel said...

d - I haven't seen it yet, but it's in my Netflix queue
