The Thursday Quiz XXVI

The Thursday Quiz!

The Thursday Quiz is an "Is It or Isn't It" game. From the list of twelve items, your job is to determine whether each IS or ISN'T a true example of the week's category.

Remember always how to act if you hope to be "discovered" by a big quiz producer:
No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. The Thursday
Quiz is a POP quiz. Violators will find themselves on the cutting room floor.
This Week's Category is connected to you through no more than six degrees of separation!

Movies Starring Kevin Bacon

He has, famously, "been in everything." But not really, of course. Which of the following films did he actually appear in?

1. Animal House (1978)
2. Apollo 13 (1995)
3. The Breakfast Club (1985)
4. A Few Good Men (1992)
5. Friday the 13th (1980)
6. JFK (1991)
7. Magnolia (1999)
8. Mystic River (2003)
9. Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
10. The River Wild (1994)
11. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
12. The Usual Suspects (1995)

Pitch your answers to some bigshot quiz executive by putting them in the comments.

However, I do not know his movies, so most of these are wild guesses.

  9. Kate will do well at this, I'm sure. I submit my usual list of random guesses, having only ever seen one of the movies, and even in that one I have no idea.

Did you know he's a singer, too? The Bacon Brothers. Mmmm...bacon.

  11. I proposed to myself to try these quizzes every week as part of an attempt to "deal with" my perfectionism and stuff, but I don't even know who Kevin Bacon is, and I've only seen one of the movies on the list. So I'd better do like I do in those dreams where I show up naked to a final exam in a number theory class I've never attended: pinch myself and wake up or walk out into the warm sunshine. I'll try again next week.

  15. Confidence bouyed by my exclamation point from Monday's quiz (which was pitched to my sweet spot), I'm going to tackle this quiz, about which I know squat. I am so tempted to answer No to them all. In fact, I think I have a better chance of getting at least some of them right if I do that. So, here goes.

I'm just not good on the pop culture stuff. Last night, watching American Idol (I'm a proud AI fan), husband Rex was stunned (stunned, I say) that I'd never heard of Heart until he'd mentioned them to me a couple of years ago. Some of this is b/c I'm foreign. Some of it is because I'm, um, ignorant. This causes me grief in the crossword puzzles. I mention crosswords because we're off to Brooklyn tomorrow for the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. My students (high school seniors) almost fell out of their chairs laughing when I told them where I was going.
Ok, sorry, this was more than anyone needed to know about anything.

  19. And now, the answers.

But first, I should mention that I would have probably taken Sandy's tack on this quiz. I would not know Kevin Bacon if I found him in my living room, and I certainly don't have a sense of which movies he has appeared in. When I researched this quiz, a few weeks ago, I put the right answers in one column and the plausible wrong answers in the other column; when I started checking answers today, I had to recheck which column was which.

    So, having said that:

    1. Animal House - Yes
    2. Apollo 13 - Yes
    3. Breakfast Club - No
    4. A Few Good Men - Yes
    5. Friday the 13th - Actually, yes.
    6. JFK - Yes.
    7. Magnolia - No.
    8. Mystic River - Yes.
    9. Planes, Trains... - Yes.
    10. River Wild - Yes.
    11. Saving Private Ryan - No.
    12. Usual Suspects - No.

  20. Two perfect scores today! The first, and the TQXXVI Gold Star, goes to Allie, who returns after a few months' absence from the winner's circle to claim her second gold. It has been a good week for Allie, with a Quiz win and, secondarily, having been accepted to graduate school.

Quiz regular Karin gets in under the wire to collect the Silver Star, her first. It is her seventh Star overall, moving her into a tie for fourth for winningest Quiz participant of all time.

Picking up the Blue Star with 11/12 is Dan; it's his first ever Star in Quiz competition.

Kudos to Karma, d, Critical Bill, and Boo, all of who scored an admirable 10/12.

  21. What? What gives, I thought Cartophiliac wins the contests.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Really? You wouldn't know Kevin Bacon if you found him in your living room? Here's a hint: he'd be the tall skinny one with angular features and blond hair. He's actually a very good actor who keeps getting crappy parts, with some notable exceptions. Sadly, he's married to Kyra Sedgewick, she of the creepy toothless black mouth (she freaks me out). He's in a band and would probably love to join you in a jam session. You know, Kevin Bacon. I mean, he's no Sting, but he'll do in a pinch.

    ReplyDelete
  23. No, Cartophiliac is good at stuff like state capitals and dead presidents. He sucks at arts and literature... and apparently... Kevin Bacon movies...

  24. Reb - Footloose doesn't do it for me. But thanks for inserting the theme song into my head this morning, where it will be planted, playing on a continuous loop, for several hours.

That sounds sarcastic, but since it has replaced "One Bad Apple" by the Osmond's (1971) which was on an early morning radio quiz today, I really do thank you. That little ditty was making me loopy.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Phineas - it's better than "Bibbety Bobbity Boo" which has been going through my head for days now.

    And possibly everyone else's, now.

Isn't there some term for viral song contagion?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh man... when he goes in front of the county and tells them that the kids just want to "Dance and sing for joy to the lord" (aka - get funky with the pastor's daughter in his sexy powder blue tux) that's just classic!

    ReplyDelete
  27. ok. i'm having a really hard time believing that kb was in 'planes, trains and automobiles'.

and, karin, i can't believe you dissed my girl, kyra sedgwick. she's far better than kb any day.

AND, i completely forgot about my most favorite kb movie which stars both of them. 'the woodsman'. creepy and fantastic.

    ReplyDelete

  28. @karma: How can they be "after your time"? You're still around!

@Nichim: Fair enough. I would have been doomed on this one, too.

@Kate: You have a "G-rated sensibility"? Because your sister seemed to think....

@Sandy: The Crossword Puzzle Tournament. Sweet. Isn't that in Hartford, though?

@Karin: Skinny one with angular features and blond hair sounds like Austin, at least if someone of that description shows up in my living room.

@Phineas/Boo: Happily, I am unfamiliar with both "One Bad Apple" and "Bibbety Bobbity Boo." The theme song from "Footloose," I think I can fend off.

Fun Fact: Alone in my generation, I have never seen "Footloose," "Flashdance," or "The Breakfast Club."

@Dan: And the Academy would like to thank YOU!

    ReplyDelete
  29. d: kyra sedgewick's not good enough for you. g is your girl. have you accepted her proposal yet?

    ReplyDelete
  30. More evidence that reading the comments is as educational as reading the quiz itself - I had no idea that Kyra "The Closer" Sedgewick and Kevin "Powder Blue Suit" Bacon were married! And I am a pop culture kind a of a girl . . . What a crazy world . . .
