The Thursday Quiz X

Ach du leiber Himmel! It's

The Thursday Quiz!

The Thursday Quiz is, as always, a "Is It or Isn't It" game. From the list of twelve items, your job is to determine whether each IS or ISN'T a true example of the week's category.

Remember always the universal constant:

No research, Googling, Wikiing, or use of reference books. The Thursday
Quiz is a POP quiz. Violators will lose their power of speech.
This Week's Category is tongue-tied!

Languages

Clarification, hopefully: What we are looking for here is, is the writing sample really an example of the language?

1. Amharic.
2. Chinese

3. Finnish

4. Hebrew
5. Hindi
6. Japanese

7. Russian

8. Serbo-Croatian

9. Somali
10. Urdu
11. Vietnamese

12. Welsh

Submit your answers, in any language you're confident I'll know the words for yes and no, in the form of a comment.

  1. I'm saying yes to 1,3,4,6,9, and 12. And what am I still doing up at this hour, anyway?

  2. I'm gonna say:

    1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9 and 12 ARE.

    So...

Right or wrong, I LIKE this one. :)

  10. PS - I think we should disqualify anyone who answered the THURSDAY quiz on Wednesday. Because I keep forgetting to check your blog before I go to bed. Uh.... I mean... because it's not fair. ;)

  11. Yes indeed. You guys are good.

The extremely charming Mrs.5000 correctly lists the right answers. Rebel correctly identified the languages shown in #2 (Korean) and #5 (Arabic). And, actually, #11, which is not Vietnamese but "Klingon". #7 is Mongolian, #8 is Bengali, and #10 is Cree.

Stars doled out in the next post.

  12. @Karin: I thought you'd like it. I liked making it.

@d: Props for answering in Russian.

@Rex: I'm more of the night owl. I had to post this one early because of an early-Thursday business trip, and that gave her the chance to pounce.

@Sandy: So THAT's how they do it in Wales....

@MDIC: As you painfully miss the blue star by a single question, would it cheer you up if I told these people that you are currently beating me by 110 points in an online Scrabble game?

@Chance: If you happen to know the answers, yes indeed.

@Rebel: I refer you to the post-quiz discussion of The Thursday Quiz IV, where it was determined that the Quiz is of necessity "live" at the moment of posting, regardless of whether it is past midnight Pacific time (or the respondant's local time). The West Coast advantage of being able to stay up late balances the East Coast advantage of getting first crack in the morning, and the Midwestern advantage of being undistracted by cultural amenities.

@Blythe: Just kidding of course. Oklahoma is OK.

  13. The Thursday Quiz ends when I say it ends!

These are mostly guesses. So what's new?

    IS: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 12
    ISN'T: 5, 7, 8, 11

  14. Fair enough... I'm setting my alarm clock next wednesday though!
